Teradata Vantage addresses critical business needs by integrating the best commercial and open source analytic technologies and empowering users to reach new heights using their preferred analytic tools and languages - at enterprise scale and performance.

 (2)Deploy Anywhere

Teradata provides analytic processing across flexible deployment options. Not only is Teradata software available on-premises via Teradata hardware or commodity hardware, it is also available via Cloud options:

  • Teradata IntelliCloud as-a-service: Teradata builds and manages the environment so companies can focus on insights.
  • Do-It-Yourself: Companies build and manage their environment themselves using Teradata software with AWS and Azure.

Note:  Teradata Vantage 1.0 Machine Learning and Graph Engines are only available on-premises via IntelliFlex.  Cloud deployment options are planned in future releases. 

(3)Buy Any Way

Teradata empowers companies to purchase software in more accommodating ways based on specific use cases. It offers simplified pricing bundles, subscription-based licenses, and as-a-service options.

2.The Platform for Pervasive Data Intelligence

Teradata Vantage is the platform for what Teradata calls, Pervasive Data Intelligence - the ability to manage all of the data, all of the time; to run complex analytics, at scale, across a variety of different formats regardless of where the data resides, allowing each user type to access the data using their preferred engines, tools, and languages. It delivers real-time intelligent answers to users and systems across all parts of an organization.

3.Background

Before we get into the details of Teradata Vantage, let's back up a little and take a look at the origins of Teradata Vantage.

Teradata conducted research and surveyed a variety of individuals who work with - and benefit from - analytics; individuals such as data scientists and business analysts as well as Chief Information Officers and Chief Marketing Officers.

 

With this research, Teradata discovered the analytic challenges facing businesses today and thus began developing a solution to rise above those challenges and to see things from a different vantage point: 
Teradata Vantage.

6.Solution to Analytic Challenges

With Teradata Vantage ...

Data and analytics are integrated to simplify data access and reduce data movement across systems, allowing analysts/data scientists to focus on analytics rather than moving and transforming data.

Open source and commercial analytic technologies are integrated to provide easy access to cutting-edge technology.

The most commonly used analytic workbenches, programming languages, and user interfaces are available to enhance the experience of a variety of user types and allow them to analyze a variety of data types in their raw format.

Users can quickly and seamlessly deploy advanced analytic models into production, which leads to timely decisions and advantageous opportunities.

All this is built on a highly performant and scalable platform that is built to meet business critical SLAs with reliability, security, availability, governance, and manageability—second to none.

(1)Data Store

With Teradata Vantage 1.0, all data is stored in the Data Store where users have access to a variety of data types (ex: geospatial, temporal, and time series) and data formats (ex: JSON, XML, Avro, CSV).

Data Store is included with Teradata Vantage.

Note: NewSQL Engine plus the Data Store was previously known as the Teradata Database.

(2)High Speed Fabric

Teradata's High Speed Fabric leverages the BYNET, and on IntelliFlex systems it leverages the fabric-based computing benefits of BYNET on InfiniBand, to provide performant, high bandwidth communications between the engines within the framework.

The High Speed Fabric is included with Teradata Vantage.

(3)Engines

An engine is a comprehensive framework integrating all the software components necessary to deliver a specific type of advanced analytics. We will cover more details in Module 3.

The Teradata Vantage license includes NewSQL, Machine Learning, and Graph Engines.

Note: NewSQL Engine plus the Data Store was previously known as the Teradata Database. Machine Learning and Graph Engines were previously known as the Aster Engine.

 (4)Languages & Tools

 Teradata Vantage provides support for the most preferred analytic languages: SQL, Python, R, SAS, and Java. It also provides support for a variety of Business Intelligence and Visualization tools, Analytics tools, and Application Frameworks, Notebooks and IDEs.

Teradata AppCenter, Teradata Studio, and client-side R and Python packages can be downloaded and installed without additional license fees.

 (5)QueryGrid External Access

Full-featured Teradata QueryGrid can be used to access data and engines not currently within the Teradata Vantage framework. It allows Vantage to access the data and engines either natively through QueryGrid or via Presto, to perform native pushdown processing AND parallel data movement into other systems such as Hadoop, Presto, and AWS S3.

Full-featured Teradata QueryGrid for external connectors can be purchased separately as part of Teradata IntelliSphere.

(1)Future Data Store

Teradata plans to extend the Data Store available in Teradata Vantage 1.0 to include native object storagevia AWS S3 and Azure Blob storage or their equivalent on-premises solution.

 (2)Future Engines

Teradata plans to add support for the following engines:

  • Spark: An open-source distributed general-purpose cluster-computing framework. Tasks most frequently associated with Spark include Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) and SQL batch jobs, and processing of streaming data from sensors/IoT, and machine learning tasks.
  • TensorFlow: An open-source software library for high performance numerical computation. It supports machine learning and deep learning.
  • SAS Viya: An open-source engine that runs in the cloud. It's designed for rapid deployment, visual analytics, and machine learning.

 (3)Future Analytic Languages

Teradata's vision broadens support for the most commonly used languages.

Scala combines object-oriented and functional programming into one, high-level language. It is commonly used for data science via Apache Spark.

9.Three Phases of Analytics

Teradata Vantage empowers companies through all phases of their business analytics evolution to help them achieve high impact business outcomes at any phase.

(1)Descriptive Analytics

The first phase of business analytics describes or summarizes raw data to report what has happened in the past. Traditionally, this is simply known as "reporting." An example is a histogram that displays the distribution of age or income.

(2)Predictive Analytics

Going a step beyond just describing what has happened, predictive analytics analyzes past behavior to predict what might happen in the future. It looks for patterns and associations to predict the likelihood of an event taking place in the future. For instance, a hotel may analyze past booking data to predict future vacancy periods in order to staff appropriately.

(3)Prescriptive Analytics

A relatively new phase, prescriptive analytics is all about providing advice. It attempts to quantify the effects of a future decision in order to suggest decision options or provide advice on the best solution or outcome among various choices. Prescriptive analytics anticipates what event will happen, when it will happen, and why it will happen. For example, Oil and gas companies use prescriptive analytics to decide where to drill to optimize extraction while minimizing the environmental impact.

No matter their business analytics evolutionary stage, Teradata Vantage provides companies with the analytic capabilities necessary to rise above their challenges and achieve success.
